A passively tolerant society says to its citizens: as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone.
It stands neutral between different values. A genuinely liberal country does much more.
It believes in certain values and actively promotes them.
Freedom of speech. Freedom of worship. Democracy. The rule of law. Equal rights regardless of race, sex or sexuality.
It says to its citizens: this is what defines us as a society.
To belong here is to believe in these things.
Each of us in our own countries must be unambiguous and hard-nosed about this defence of our liberty.

Ska vi tolerera intolerans?
David Cameron har hållt ett uppmärksammat tal (här kan du läsa hela). Ett omdebatterat avsnitt:

En intressant fråga i den föregående trådens fotspår... Hur mycket intolerans tål ett samhälle med ambitioner att vara tolerant?

I stycke ovan står att det är inte tillräckligt med en passiv tolerans: "as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone"
Sedan lyfts värden fram som definierar samhället: "Freedom of speech. Freedom of worship. Democracy. The rule of law. Equal rights regardless of race, sex or sexuality."
Jag trodde dessa värden var lag i Storbritannien. Vad måste man göra mer än att följa lagen? Detta är Cameron otydlig med.
Det skall vara tillräckligt att "as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone". Om det inte är det så behöver lagen skärpas.
